Introducing Go West’s Tour Guide of the Year…. Scott!

Here at Go West, we employ over 40 of the industry’s most enthusiastic and dedicated individuals! You might think these guys have it easy – being able introduce guests from across the globe some of the most incredible destinations across Victoria, but I can assure you it takes a special character to fill this position. After all, you’ll need a charming personality, a great sense of humor (and direction!), and above all….. patience!

That’s why we reward our superstar guides for all of their hard work throughout the year. Today we caught up with Scott to applaud his efforts over the last 12 months and ask him a few question about his time with Go West!

First of all, tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name’s Scott, I’ve been working for Go West for about 18 months now! When I’m not working you’ll find me planning my next holiday, or heading to an AFL match in Melbourne! I’ve been to over 40 countries in my time both traveling and working abroad, and I’m hoping to increase that number soon.

How did you come to work as a Tour Guide for Go West?
Before starting with Go West I spent a number of years living the European dream as a Tour Manager for Contiki! At the End of 2016 I decided it was time to move back to Australia, and just happened to hear about Go West Tours from a friend who was working for them at the time. Shortly after I began my training as a guide for Go West and haven’t looked back!

What is your favourite part of the job?
It’s a pretty fantastic thing to be able to show people from all around the world such a great part of Australia. I’ve always been a huge people person — I love meeting guests, and hearing their stories. Being a tour guide provides tons of opportunities to get to know people whom you may have never met, and may never see again. And you really get to know them!

What is the greatest challenge you have faced as a guide?
Some of the days are quite long and can be tiring! Its really important to relax and make sure to recharge you’re batteries when you can, whether it be while out on tour or on your days off.

Which is your favourite Go West tour destination and why?
Definitelt the Great Ocean Road! The area is incredibly familiar for me, I grew up in s small town along the coast called Torquay so it’s kinda like showing people around my home. You also cannot beat a great day in the Grampians, the landscape up there is incredible!

What is your most important advice for guests visiting Melbourne for the first time?
Get out and watch as much live sport as you can – AFL, Soccer, Cricket or Rugby! It’s a great way to enjoy an evening or afternoon and get a feel for Melbourne life.

What’s your secret to being a fantastic tour guide?
Always keep in mind that regardless of how many times you have been to a particular destination, the day of your tour is probably the only time in their lives that you guests will visit this spot, so you have to do what to can to make their visit a memorable one.

We hope you can join us in congratulating Scott, as well as the whole Go West team on another fantastic year! Scott and the rest of our outstanding guides here at Go West are ready to give you an unforgettable day trip with Great Ocean Road Tours, Phillip Island Tours, Grampians Day Tours and more.
